Manado, September 9, 2024 — On September 9, 2024, the English Education Student Association at IAIN Manado organized an engaging English Debate Class aimed at enhancing students’ critical thinking and public speaking skills. The event attracted numerous participants eager to refine their debating abilities.
The class kicked off with an introduction to the fundamentals of debate, facilitated by Nofikasari Gobel,S.Pd, an experienced debater and former delegate in POROS INTIM competition. Miss Nofika explained various debating styles, emphasizing the importance of argument structure, rebuttals, and effective communication. “Debate is not just about winning; it’s about presenting your ideas clearly and respectfully,” she stated.
Following the introduction, students were divided into teams and given a controversial topic to debate. This interactive format encouraged students to think on their feet and engage in constructive discussions. Observers noted the enthusiasm and energy in the room as participants passionately defended their positions.
Feedback sessions were held after each debate, allowing teams to reflect on their performance and receive constructive criticism from peers and mentors. Many students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to practice and improve their skills in a supportive environment.
“I learned a lot about structuring my arguments and thinking critically,” said Bakar, a first-year student. “This class has boosted my confidence in public speaking.”
The English Debate Class is part of a series of events organized by the English Education Student Association to foster a vibrant academic community and promote essential skills among students. The association plans to continue hosting similar activities throughout the semester.
